Arestin

Fighting Gum Disease With Arestin

What Is Arestin?

Arestin is a topical antibiotic that treats the bacteria that cause gum disease. It is made up of a powder with thousands of tiny microspheres, tiny, bead-like particles smaller than grains of sand and invisible to the naked eye. They release antibiotics over long periods of time into the pockets where bacteria breed, helping your gums heal.

When Would Dr. Carlson Use Arestin in Your Treatment?

If you’ve been diagnosed with periodontitis (advanced gum disease), Dr. Carlson may recommend Arestin in your treatment. Gum disease is caused by microbial plaque that colonizes on your teeth’s surfaces and below the gumline. This bacteria breaks down the tissue and even the bone supporting your teeth.

If left untreated, your gums can become inflamed and the tissues and bone that hold your teeth up can begin to deteriorate. Infected gums can pull away from the teeth, creating pockets that become a breeding ground for more bacteria. Dr. Carlson use Arestin to help fight gum disease after a periodontal procedure called scaling and root planing. This is a non-surgical procedure where Dr. Carlson deep clean above and below the gumline to remove plaque that has built up on the teeth.
